I have worked hard to achieve something, put in all the effort taken the appropriate decisions, I am a self-made man is what often strikes the mind of the person who is rapidly reaching new horizons. There are two kinds of people in such circumstances with two very different mindsets. One person attributes all of the good things and the calamities that come in his life towards fate. When things are going good and he thinks it is a time of good luck for him and when things go wrong he thinks it is only bad luck and he is likely to become lucky again.
The second person thinks whenever he achieves something or whenever things are going uphill and perfect it is all his effort and doing and he takes the whole credit of his success. This same person, when he faces difficulty or when his life is going downhill starts blaming Allah. The guilt of his failures makes him prey to depression and hopelessness follows. This person starts thinking that perhaps Allah doesn’t want him to be successful or happy or Allah wants to punish him for no reason. Now let’s discuss in detail why this question arises, why a person loses hope and how he can break free of this depression?
Allah talks about both of these persons in the Quran and says “And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful. But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, ‘Bad times have left me’.Indeed, he is exultant and boastful. Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.” [Surah Hud Verses 9-11]
From these verses, it is evident that all hardships and all success is from Allah. A person attributing his success totally on himself and forgetting that his very existence was because of Allah from a mere drop of semen. Thinking supreme of yourself and forgetting the All-Giver causes his displeasure and in turn, he takes away that very achievement because he wants the person to realize his fault. This person is now left in a state of anguish, depression consumes him, and he loses all the self-belief that he had. Now when Allah gives this person a second chance by removing the calamity that has affected him, this person again forgets to thank Allah and instead thinks that the bad time has passed.
Think about your own birth, think about how you learned to breathe, how you learned to walk, talk and eat. Yes, you put in the effort, yes you do work very hard to achieve your goals but think about who gave you the strength to work hard, the wisdom to work smart in the end everything we have tracks back to the Creator. There is no self-made man, all that a man possesses every single thing is a blessing from Allah and he should be thankful and humble at all times under all circumstances. If you accept this and learn to be patient at all times, Allah (S.W.T) will never let you down and keep your status high in this world and in the hereafter as well Insha’Allah.
